How your beliefs are fucking you up

We are meaning making machines, we walk through life giving everything a meaning

It’s how we interpret the world

And from the meanings that we decide, we formulate our beliefs

What we believe shapes everything about our lives

We solve problems based on our beliefs

We get into relationships with certain people based on what we believe about ourselves and them

We make choices about how and where we live based on what we believe we deserve

And our beliefs were all formed in the past, most often before we were seven years old

Unless we examine our subconscious mind (which numerous neuroscientists have said controls 95% of what most of us do and how we behave) then we are being defined by the past, and not just any past, but a past that was for the most part formulated in childhood

As Jung very famously said “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate”

When we investigate our beliefs, we can change our thoughts, and when we change our thoughts, we behave differently, make new choices and can create entirely new experiences for ourselves

The hardest part of change is not making the same choice you did the day before and to do that, you have to investigate your beliefs

If I believe:

I will have to settle

I attract untrustworthy men

There is a scarcity of good men

I am catnip for avoidant men

I am not chosen

Then I will subconsciously look to prove these beliefs

The brain recognises things because of patterns

What it is most looking for is what is familiar

Having a belief might feel terrible or be causing us harm but because the subconscious mind finds it familiar, we WILL seek it out

And a further kicker is many of us have no idea how our beliefs are controlling us and our life experience

We haven’t questioned or looked at our beliefs, we’ve just accepted them as true

I know when I started working with my beliefs I said: ‘BUT IT’S TRUE!!!’ a lot

However, as I started to question (well everything) I started to see that it was true because something had happened

And then I made a decision about what it meant

And that crystallised into a belief

Which I then went round (subconsciously of course) looking for evidence to prove

Actually 2 people can go through THE EXACT SAME situation and make a totally different meaning from it

One could make an empowered meaning and belief that drives them forward

And the other, a disempowered meaning and belief that stops them in their tracks

Think about the person who gets knocked back time after time and uses that as fuel to keep going, deciding that they will succeed no matter what

Versus the person who gets knocked back and decides that they’re no good, a failure and stops trying
